Truth

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

For the past few years I’ve thought about truth a lot. Our contemporary first-world culture is inundated with information. In societies that treasure personal rights, we extend that right to express ourselves, often in words that irritate and vehemently disagree with the expressions of others. Some of these disagreements we orchestrate for the purpose of distilling acceptable behavior—the “what if the shoe was on the other foot” debate. Other disagreements, the ones that wear blinders while looking down from podiums, expose our souls much like the restless evil of our tongues.

Paul saw truth positively and listed with other positive essences: noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy. He asks us to think on these things, to keep them close, to instill them in our minds and hearts. If these qualities become natural, what other choice is there but to respond to life through this magnificent lens?

I’m pleased to take part in a series of novellas that expand upon each of the qualities in Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, chapter 4:8. My story shows us how truth impacts our lives. When our romantic couple, Danny and Shelly (who met in the first novella, Everything About You), are ready to take their relationship to the next level, secrets and lies dodge their journey, trying to trip them up. Truth must go hand in hand with faith and trust. Only when we meld these qualities can we permit truth, spoken in love, the power to heal.

If my truth is not your truth, what do we do? My answer is to examine the source of our truth and look for common ground. As Christians I want to believe that we stand on one unshakeable truth: Jesus died, Jesus rose, Jesus will come again. Everything else is pretension.
