Looking Out the Window: An Elaine Marie Cooper Devotional and Giveaway

I'm so happy to have Elaine Marie Cooper here with an inspirational devotional, "Unwrapped Hearts," and a giveaway for February. She'll also tell us about her new book, The Road to Deer Run, and share some of her reviews. Be sure to leave a comment with your email address (name at address dot com) for a chance to win a copy. I'll draw a name and announce a winner on Monday, February 7th.

UNWRAPPED HEARTS

Don’t you love those bright, beribboned heart boxes of candy that appear in the stores in February? You hope against common-sense hope (how many calories in those sweets?? Oh my…!) that maybe you will be one of the lucky recipients this year.

But imagine receiving such a heartfelt gift from someone you love…only to discover that someone had been poking around in there beforehand, leaving undetected holes in the bottom of each candy. I would personally be hurt and more than a little disappointed. No one wants such a special gift to be ruined by someone’s selfish act. It would, at the very least, make us question the sincerity of the giver.

I can only imagine what my Savior thinks when my gifts from the heart to Him are filled with finger pokes of selfishness, pride, and other seemingly undetectable sins. He can see past the wrapping straight through to my heart that is so easily prone to wander from His perfection.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (NIV)
“Wellspring” is defined as “an abundant source or supply of anything.” It could be a source of compassion, a source of forgiveness, a source of real love—the kind of love that Jesus poured out for us on the cross when His heart stopped beating for us.

As we celebrate love in this season of Valentine’s Day, let’s be diligent about keeping our hearts safely wrapped and untampered by that which so easily distracts us from the purity of God’s love. Let’s be HIS wellspring!

About The Road to Deer Run
The year is 1777 and the colonies of America are at war with England. In the midst of this fierce and painful conflict, two enemies—a wounded British soldier and a colonial farmwoman—are brought together through circumstances that challenge their fortitude, their faith and their ability to forgive. In the struggle comes healing and love. But as their destinies become intertwined, so do the forces that oppose them.

The Road to Deer Run sounds wonderful. I like the idea of setting the story at the dawn of American history, because that was also the dawn of our country as a faith-based nation. I find it sad we've gone so far the other way.

I also like your analogy about our intentions toward God and our faith being like chocolates with holes poked in the bottom. So frequently I put something in God's hands in prayer, then before He even has a chance to help me, I snatch it back and start worrying over it again. I guess each time I do that I am poling holes in His chocolate!

I'm ever so glad that Christ looks past my own thoughts and still lives there in my heart in spirit...a bite of candy is such a small thing, but when it hurts another...why oh why do we do it...!

Hello Everyone,
I'm getting to the party a little late, but I'm so pleased to have Elaine on my blog. Thanks to all of you for stopping by.
Thank you ladies! So glad this devotional blessed your hearts. I constantly have to evaluate my own motives to make sure my offering of worship to the Lord is without holes. Those "pokes" of sin can appear so subtly sometimes. Thank God for His grace!

And I hope you enjoy "The Road to Deer Run." Looking forward to blessing someone with a free copy!

Please enter me for The Road to Deer Run. Thank you.

I loved your correlation between getting chocolates that have been poked in and our ingratitude to God's gifts.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. I’ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandy’s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldn’t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. “Okay, you’re being bad today.” Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. “Hi, how are you?” she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, “I want the steak.” “Sure, which one would you like?” Mandy asked. “I don’t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?” Mandy’s lips turned down. “Yes sir, which one do you want to order?” “I want it medium rare. I don’t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.” “Yes sir, which steak di

Psalm 40:1-3‚ “I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.” Can you think of a time when God helped you out of a low place? Perhaps something had caused you to spiral downward, or maybe like the Old Testament character, Jonah, you had run away from God so as not to have to do what He was asking of you.  Through this passage, we see that David was experiencing this first-hand. He was in a place of despair, yet God was gracious, and after some time, placed David in a new area of serv

Looking Out the Window: Brandy Heineman Talks about Writing and Her New Book, Whispers in the Braches

A Warm Welcome to Brandy Heineman Photo credit: Copyright Emilie Hendryx of E. A. Creative Photography, 2014. Hi Brandy, lots of writers enjoyed reading as a child. How about you? If so, what did you read? Oh, yes. I always loved to read. I adored mysteries— The Dollhouse Murders and Behind the Attic Wall come to mind—and of course I had my Baby-Sitters Club and Sweet Valley High phase, my Roald Dahl phase, my Judy Bloom phase . . . I was quite a bookish child, I’d say! About Whispers in the Branches In 1942, Ruby lost something. In 2012, Abby found it. Abby’s love life, career, and faith are in shambles when she first hears Great Aunt Ruby’s claims that the family home is haunted. Abby moves in, determined to shake out a ghost, but the secrets she discovers there aren’t the ones she hopes to find. Whispers in the Branches is my first novel.
