About Beautiful Inside and Out – Larry’s latest short story
Bess Simpson, a sharp college student in engineering, wasn’t into checking out the men on campus but one in particular, Art Fuller, did catch her eye. She perceives she’s overweight despite her best friend, Milla, telling her otherwise. Can Bess catch Art’s eye and capture his heart when he is dating Angie, the petite drum major for the marching band? Will being a top student in aeronautical engineering and a math whiz help her sway Art her way as she tutors him in math? What happens when she meets Angie on two different occasions?

Very few questions were asked as she wrapped it up after an hour. Many passed by her, thanking her and addressing her as Miss Simpson. They didn’t give her time to tell them to drop that formality now that the lecture was over. Veronique
complimented her as she passed by. Art was still seated, conversing with a friend beside him about something in his notes. He finished, rose from his
seat, sidestepped to the aisle, and danced down the steps toward her. Bess took a deep breath.
“Miss Simpson, thanks so much for a great lecture,” Art said, coming to a standstill in front of her. Everyone else had left.“For goodness’ sakes, Art. It’s Bess,” she said, laughing.
“Art. Let’s go,” Angie called from the back of the room. She stood with her hands on her waist, her hip cocked, her face in a scowl aimed at Bess.
“I’m talking to Bess. Be there in five minutes.
Oh, and let’s just have a malt tonight. Skip the movie. I’ve got to study, big time.” Angie stomped out.
About "Lab Partners"
Leroy Doyle, a college chemistry major and track star is on the verge of scholastic probation after flunking calculus. As he enters his sophomore year he can’t afford the distractions of having a girl friend, but that changes once he meets Jody Stinson. A chemical engineering major and the smartest student in the sophomore class, she is beautiful, arrogant, and not very happy about being forced into being his lab partner. But Leroy senses there is more to Jody than she portrays to the outside world. Her treatment of him only serves to fuel his interest and despite her barbed remarks, he strives to win her heart.
Excerpt from Lab Partners:
"You going to be late for every lab?" she asked as he placed his books near hers.
"Leroy Doyle," he said, extending his hand for a shake. She ignored it, maintaining a scowl.
"I'm hoping my literature professor will allow me to leave class five minutes early the day we have lab. Smith Hall is a long way." Leroy gave up and withdrew his offer of a handshake.
"I'm not interested in your excuses. I'm only partnering with you because Doctor Braddock insists everyone have a partner," Jody said, staring at him with her piercing brown eyes.
Leroy resolved not to judge her. Despite her sharp reply, he thought she was beautiful. She was slender, perhaps five-eleven, only an inch shorter than he was. Her red hair curled inward just below her ears. The smooth, shiny hair framed a pretty face, her eyes behind steel-rimmed glasses. The faintly cherry lips held a scornful tilt. Her flared lavender skirt hung below her knees in alluring folds, neatly arranged about her legs as she sat on the lab stool. Intricate flowers adorned her white blouse and Leroy made an effort not to gaze below her chin, at least while she was looking at him.

Larry’s Favorite Bible Scripture: Ruth 1: 16 -17, “But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.’”
Leroy quoted this passage at his and Jody’s wedding at the end of A Change of Heart, a book based on the characters in "Lab Partners."

Nourish the Body
One of Larry’s favorite things to eat – his wife Sue’s peanut butter fudge
Continue cooking to soft-ball stage: 235 degrees. Remove from heat, quickly stir in one jar (7 oz.) marshmallow cream, one jar (18 oz.) peanut butter.
Pour into two (8x8x2) greased pans.
Makes 5 lbs.

PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE

Into large heavy pan put 2 lbs. confectioner’s sugar, one half cup butter or margarine and one can (13 oz.) evaporated milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until ingredients melt.Continue cooking to soft-ball stage: 235 degrees. Remove from heat, quickly stir in one jar (7 oz.) marshmallow cream, one jar (18 oz.) peanut butter.
Pour into two (8x8x2) greased pans.
