Modern Day Miracle
I tried to do everything that was expected of a good Christian teenager. I went to church, alone if I had to. Attended churches of all denominations—trying to find the perfect one for me. I even took Bible Study courses through the mail. I was doing it all and was very proud of myself.
Right out of High School I got married and moved across country with my young husband who had joined the Air Force. Two years later we had a daughter and thought life was perfect. Three years later, I was divorced and the single parent of a toddler.
During my five year marriage, I didn’t attend church once. Life was going good and God got set on the back-burner until I felt I needed Him. I didn’t call on Him during my divorce or the years following it.
The years following my divorce were wild. I sunk into a deep depression and was too ashamed to call on God to save me. I had turned away from all He had taught me. Yet, I wasn’t able to leave behind my nightly prayers. During the worst time in my life, when I felt I couldn’t ask Him for anything, I still couldn’t fall asleep until I told Him goodnight.
I was remarried in 1989 to a man with three children of his own. We struggled to bring our blended family together. We thought that together we could do this. We never asked God whether we could—or should.
God opened our eyes one day and my husband and I decided that the thing that was missing in our family was God. We began attending church and brought our blended family with us.
In 1991, my husband and I, along with three of our children, rededicated ourselves to the Lord. A date for our baptism was set. I had already been baptized when I had accepted Jesus all those years ago, but wanted our family to do this wondrous thing together.
I wear glasses and on the morning of our baptism, found myself standing with my family at the edge of the pool that our church had rented for the occasion. I took off my glasses and couldn’t see a thing. In my excitement, I had forgotten to wear my contacts. I prayed to God for a miracle. I wanted to “see” my children baptized.
My husband went first--then it was my turn. The pastor turned to him and asked whether he would like to be the one to baptize me. My husband’s smile was answer enough. When I came up out of the sparkling water I turned and watched my children baptized.
That’s right. I watched them baptized. I could see them clearly. With tears running down my cheeks and a face that was hurting from a wide smile, I could see them clearly. When I exited the pool, I had to put my glasses back on.
Although I had spent years away from God, He had stood firmly where I had left Him. He waited patiently for my return. When I did return, God answered the simple prayer of this wayward child of His. The simple prayer of, “God, I want to see my children baptized.”
I hold fast to God’s promise in Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it. My parents, although they may not have always joined me in church as a child, did teach me to love the Lord and instilled in me godly morals. I see now that the choices I made as an adult were never enough to cause God to forsake me.
Since that time long ago, he has continued to bless us. We now have three adopted children who we are teaching to walk with Jesus. Our adult children are now giving us beautiful grandchildren and I am looking forward to the day when I can “see” them all baptized. – Cynthia M. Hickey

It's very nice to meet you, and congrats on the success of your books. Yes, I too, wear glasses and that old saying "as blind as a bat" is true for me - only I have no radar to guide me either! LOL
I absolutely love the titles of your cozy mysteries! :) (anything dealing with chocolate and I'm a goner! LOL)
Love the cover of this book and I just barely know what a Harvey Girl is because I read about them in Reminisce magazine. :) Great concept for a plot, and my hat is off to you for conceiving such an original idea! :)
I enjoyed reading about your life and your ins and outs with the Lord. It happens to a lot of us, but I still believe the best Christian witness is someone who has fallen and been restored. These people are easy to relate to, less likely to be judgmental.
You book cover is beautiful and your story sounds awesome. Here's praying God's best on everything you write.
It's great seeing you here. Thanks so much for stopping by.
Hi, Cindy! I still have tears in my eyes from reading your testimony. Although we've become good friends at ACFW conferences, I never knew "your story." I love your Harvey Girls novels and am so anxious to read this latest one.
Love you, girl!
