Hi Ginger, tell us a little about yourself.
Without repeating my bio… my name is Ginger. I live in northern Alabama with my husband and six of our seven children—the oldest moved out a few months ago. I homeschool the youngest four, but in a few short weeks that will change as the oldest of them will graduate high school. I love reading, coloring (even before it was “in vogue”), reading, writing, reading, needlework (cross-stitch, crochet, and knitting), and reading (but I think I mentioned that one already). I am also a “gaming” mom, much to my son’s enjoyment. Many of their friends are jealous. LOL
I see you love to read. Were you an avid reader as a child? If so, what did you read?
Absolutely. There were many of a night that I would stay up until one or two in the morning reading, and then get up at six to go to school. I can’t do that anymore. I enjoyed a variety of books, as I do now, but back then I mostly read mystery and suspense, including Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.
I enjoyed those books as well. Tell us about your latest book.
Second Choice is the second book in my newly entitled Belikarian Weddings Series. Book one, One Choice, released in February 2014. Second Choice is Princess Anaya’s story. Her father gave her one year to choose a husband from among five approved noble sons. With only three weeks until the wedding, her first choice disappeared, and she was forced to make a second choice. Knowing time was running out, she turned to her Heavenly Father for wisdom, since she no longer trusted her own judgment in regards to people’s intentions or actions.
While it sounds like a historical novel, it is a contemporary romance based in a fictional country, Belikara, located in the Aegean Sea.
What inspired you to write this particular book?
My readers. After One Choice released many of the clamored for Princess Anaya’s story, while others wanted Matthias’s story. Both will get their wish. Second Choice released April 28th, and I hope Love’s Choice, the third book in the series, will release this fall.
Where do you get ideas for your books?
Many of them come to me in dreams. It’s the reason I started writing in the first place. I had a dream that would not leave me alone, so I wrote it down. The words kept flowing, and in the end, I had written my first novel. Some of them come to me in the midst of worship.
In three words describe your style of writing.
Three words? Goodness. Organized, chaotic, and organic. Ha. It sounds like an oxymoron, I know, but my thoughts are organized chaos. I know where I want to go with the story, but getting there is not always easy.
How do you get to know your characters?
Before I start the story, I have an idea of the type of people they are. I get a mental image of what they look like, find a picture on the Internet to match, and move from there. I usually know their basic information—height, birthdate, age, etc—before the story begins. Then I learn more about them as the story unfolds.I’ve tried to fill out character interviews in the past, but they tend to lie to me on those, so I quit.
What themes do you write about?
Trust and forgiveness. I didn’t realize it until several books into my writing career (not all have been published) when I noticed each one touched on one or both of these since they almost always go hand-in-hand.
Does your faith affect your writing? How?
Most definitely. How could it not? I live my life to glorify God. I don’t always do a good job, but He knows my heart. This includes my writing. I rarely write salvation messages in my stories, but all of my characters will either find faith, renew their faith, or continue to have a strong faith in God at some point.
Do you put yourself in your books?
To a certain extent, yes. Again, how could I not? I know my personality best, so a part of me goes into a least one of my characters.
What are you working on right now?
I’m a busy writer at the moment. I’ve just sent Love’s Choice to my publisher, and, as I said before, hope it releases in the fall. In addition, Broken Freedom, the final novella in the Broken Holidays Series, will release mid-June. And I have another novella, not yet named, that I’m writing which will release mid-September.
