Looking Out the Window: Alexis Goring Talks About Writing And Her New Book, A Second Chance

A Warm Welcome to Alexis Goring

Hi Alexis, first, tell us a little about yourself.

Alexis here! I’m a writer at heart and a journalist by profession.

I love to interview people and learn from their life stories!

I like to connect with creative people who are chefs, architects, writers, photographers, actors, and musicians.

I’m passionate about storytelling that makes a difference, vegetarian East Indian and Filipino food, Barnes & Noble bookstore, PANERA’s Autumn Squash soup and French baguette with whipped butter, shopping at my favorite malls, writing, photography, Contemporary Christian/Gospel music and romantic comedy movies!

Lots of writers loved to read as children. How about you? If so, what did you read?

Yes! As a child, I loved reading the Berenstain Bears books. I spent most of my pre-teen summers and teenage years breezing through the Sweet Valley High book series.

Let's talk about your writing. Why do you write?

I write because I need to breathe. Writing is just as important as breathing to me. I write to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I write to warm hearts and make my readers smile. I write to share hope with the world and point them to a Savior (Jesus Christ) who loves them with all of His divine heart.

What do you love about A Second Chance? And what do you hope readers will tell others about it?

I love the cover of my book, the storyline and my characters!

I hope that readers will tell others that they loved my book and recommend it as a lighthearted, inspirational read that will encourage their heart.

In three words describe your style of writing.

Riveting. Creative. Sweet.

How do you get to know your characters?

I create GMC charts for each character, which helps me to discover their goal/motivation/conflict (GMC). I fill out character profile charts too that help me to determine their personality, style, background, relationships, career and dreams.

However, I’m more of a pantser than a plotter, so sometimes I get to know my characters better as I write the story.

Does your faith affect your writing? How?

Yes. My faith inspires me to encourage real life people through the stories of my fictional characters.

Do you put yourself in your books?

Sometimes! Most of my characters share something in common with me, from their personality to their outlook on life. But I’ve yet to write a character that is completely like me.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on two stories—one about characters who love a famous bakery in the heart of Northwest D.C. and another about a wedding photographer that has never been in love.

They are fictional stories under the Contemporary Romance category.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Yes! Study the craft of writing. Take classes that will help you grow as an aspiring author. Keep the faith and trust that if a writing career is in God’s plans for your life, then it will happen.

About A Second Chance

Newly single food critic and newspaper reporter Traci Hightower is done with dating. After the man of her dreams left her at the altar on their wedding day and ran off with the woman she thought was her best friend, Traci resolves to focus on work and resigns herself to being a bachelorette for life.

Marc Roberts is a political reporter who is known as Mr. Nice Guy, the one who always finishes last. However, Marc’s compassion and kindness are of invaluable help to his newly widowed sister Gina Braxton who is trying to raise her two kids in the wake of her firefighter husband’s death.

Traci and Marc may be the perfect match, but they don’t know it yet. With God’s guidance and the help of Gina’s matchmaking skills honed by her career as a bestselling romance novelist, there is hope for a happily ever after for these two broken hearts.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. I’ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandy’s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldn’t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. “Okay, you’re being bad today.” Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. “Hi, how are you?” she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, “I want the steak.” “Sure, which one would you like?” Mandy asked. “I don’t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?” Mandy’s lips turned down. “Yes sir, which one do you want to order?” “I want it medium rare. I don’t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.” “Yes sir, which steak di...

Watch for the announcement, giving the exact date and time on her  Facebook Page   Scriptural videos also available. See below.*  In a Pit? Psalm 40:1-3‚ “I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.” Can you think of a time when God helped you out of a low place? Perhaps something had caused you to spiral downward, or maybe like the Old Testament character, Jonah, you had run away from God so as not to have to do what He was asking of you.  Through this passage, we see that David was experiencing this first-hand. He was in a place of despair, yet God was gracious, and after some time, placed Dav...
