About Mattie's Choice

It's 1925 in rural Oklahoma. A naïve seventeen-year-old Mattie chooses to elope with Jesse, leaving behind an ideal life with her wealthy and loving family. With hope for a happy future, she vows to stay with her husband through good times or bad, but the wonderful life Mattie dreams of is shattered by Jesse's abusive nature and his refusal to allow her to see her family.

When Jesse’s brother, Joe, brings home his new wife--the vivacious Ella--Mattie believes Ella is living the life Mattie prays to have with Jesse. As the years grow harder and Jesse and Mattie’s growing family struggles to survive The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl and illness, Jesse’s abuse worsens.

Life also unravels for Ella and Joe as he begins to abuse his wife. Ella makes the choice that Mattie has never considered.

Will Mattie keep her vow to stay with Jesse at the risk of her own life and the life of her children or will she leave him despite the vow?

How much of this book is based on real life?

Almost the entire book. My mother-in-law lived during perilous times. Her sister-in-law, on the husband’s side, became her best friend. In 1925, women were supposed to be submissive, stay married, and if abuse occurred, society considered it to be their fault. My mother-in-law faced a controlling husband. She wasn’t allowed to see her family. The jealous husband prevented her from visiting her child in the hospital. Not only did this strong woman succeed as an amazing mother, but she also endured The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and other historical events of the day. This is not a biography, but it is inspired by a woman who did what I couldn’t do.

What makes this book special to you?

It has been on my heart for more than ten years. I’ve rewritten it many times. I’ve prayed over it so often that I believe the Lord is saying to me, “Enough already. I’ve heard you.”

Why is this a must read?

This book is historical, but contemporary women face controlling, abusive men. My prayer is that, through this book, they see the damages and consequences and get help. Help is available today, but it wasn't for Mattie in 1925.

What does your family think of your writing?

Oh my! What a question! My husband and daughters think all my books are wonderful. My husband’s siblings have mixed reactions about my latest, Mattie’s Choice. Admitting their mom lived with a man who abused her is painful. I’ve told them often that the book is not biographical, but that their mom inspired it. She was a strong woman who reared eleven successful children. Four entered the ministry. Some events in this book actually happened to her. Additional events occurred to others I know. A few I totally invented.

Any advice for women planning a wedding?

If you're considering marriage, learn as much as you can about the intended's family. Did he or she grow up with abuse? Ask questions. Who will manage money? Will there be a budget? Can we make decisions together? If there's a disagreement, are you, as a wife, willing to allow your husband to lead?

Where can we reach you?

As i read this post, I have mixed emotions about Mattie's Choice. I'm not sure that it will be an easy book to read BUT I think that it is a needed book to read. Abuse is very prevalent today but I do believe that today's women do have more support than the women mentioned in Mattie's Choice but the stigma is still strong. I'm sure that all of them go endure a lot before they make the decision that they have endured enough. Gay, your mother-in-law is to be commended!
Thanks for the chance to win this book.
Blessings!

Thanks Connie! The book deals with a serious subject, and it's an unforgettable book. The book has hope, and We owe a debt of gratitude to the women who went before us and blazed new trails. Women were thought to be too stupid in Mattie's day to drive or even vote. Careers were few. A woman could teach until she married. Times are so much better for us today, yet some men are still cruel. I've known many women that think they deserve abuse. I hope this book teaches them that they don't. Sometimes one can see themselves by looking at another. I hope this is the case. Thanks for this comment.

An important topic to read about and I am sure this will be an eye-opener. I also know some people that have experienced that. Tough topic!

It's a well crafted tale about a difficult subject, but it will create good opportunities for discussion! I don't think I could have done what Mattie did, either.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. I’ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandy’s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldn’t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. “Okay, you’re being bad today.” Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. “Hi, how are you?” she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, “I want the steak.” “Sure, which one would you like?” Mandy asked. “I don’t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?” Mandy’s lips turned down. “Yes sir, which one do you want to order?” “I want it medium rare. I don’t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.” “Yes sir, which steak di...

Psalm 40:1-3‚ “I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.” Can you think of a time when God helped you out of a low place? Perhaps something had caused you to spiral downward, or maybe like the Old Testament character, Jonah, you had run away from God so as not to have to do what He was asking of you.  Through this passage, we see that David was experiencing this first-hand. He was in a place of despair, yet God was gracious, and after some time, placed Dav...
