About Dreams Deferred

Frances Matthew Hall is obedient to family tradition: all firstborn sons will serve as a priest. Now Matt officiates at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. But when on Easter Sunday, he notices a beautiful young woman who takes his breath away, he must fight against his attraction to her or leave the priesthood and alienate his entire family.

Mary Louise Graham is a middle school teacher and devout catholic. Yet no amount of service to the community can ease the heavy load of guilt she carries. God can never forgive her unspeakable mistake. But when Father Matt tells her about a forgiving God through His son Jesus Christ, she's free. Only thing, the Godly priest now means more to her than he should.

Can two people find their way to each other amidst insurmountable obstacles? Dreams Deferred is inspired by the author's great grandfather and great grandmother's story.

The evening breeze lifted a strand of his dark hair, and he ran his hand over the back of his neck. "I've always loved music, especially the violin and performing with the symphony. I believe God can use our talents for what He wants to accomplish."

"How could God use the San Antonio Symphony for His purpose?"

"I don't mean specifically the symphony." He stared at something over her shoulder. "But music in general."

"I don't understand."

He lowered his gaze and captured hers, his eyes magnetic. "I haven't discussed this with many people, but I have a heart for teenage kids. Especially those who're destroying their lives with drugs."
"Hmm. How does that relate to music?"

A slow smile worked its way over Father Matt's lips. "I've always wanted to begin a ministry teaching underprivileged kids to play an instrument and involve them in an orchestra. To instill in them the joy and transforming power of music. If teens are busy learning the trombone or flute, they might not have time to hang out on the streets and become vulnerable to drug use."

She hadn't heard of the concept before, but it sounded wonderful. Something or Someone must've put the desire in his heart. "Have drugs impacted your life?"

"Yes, you might say that. It was in high school. I had a friend who overdosed and died." He turned his back to her a moment, maybe in an attempt to hide his emotion. After a few seconds, he faced her again, his gaze focused on something over her shoulder. "Carlos and I were good friends but not close enough, apparently. I thought I knew him, but I didn't. He never told me he took street drugs."
Mary Louise reached toward him then yanked her hand to her side again. How could she think of touching a priest, even if she'd only wanted to comfort him? "I'm so sorry."

"I think God used the incident to put the desire in my heart. The memory is always with me, and the longing to help young people is stronger than ever."

"You're very close to God." A position she'd give anything to enjoy.

"Yes, but anyone can draw near to Him."

Mary Louise didn't care if she stared now, searching every inch of his beautiful face—from his short, dark hair to his prickly cheeks to his masculine lips. If only she had access into his heart and the treasures he stored there.

Fascinating story! I would love to read this one. I am a little familiar with Catholicism as my husband was raised in that faith. Thanks for the opportunity! elise_jehan(at)yahoo(dot)com.

Elise, my husband was also raised in the Catholic faith and of course my great grandfather was a Catholic for a period of time. I loved writing the story as it is based on a real story. I love to see the expression on a person's face when I tell them my great grandfather was a Catholic priest. Thanks for your comment.

Hi June,

It's my pleasure to have you.
To be inspired by your great grandfather and great grandmother's story is so awesome. I wrote a story that was inspired by the courtship of my parents back in the 1940s. I think stories that are inspired from true life are exceptional. Congratulations!

Clare, I know you must've enjoyed writing about your relatives as much as I did mine. Keeping their memory alive is so important. Thanks for your comment.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. I’ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandy’s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldn’t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. “Okay, you’re being bad today.” Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. “Hi, how are you?” she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, “I want the steak.” “Sure, which one would you like?” Mandy asked. “I don’t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?” Mandy’s lips turned down. “Yes sir, which one do you want to order?” “I want it medium rare. I don’t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.” “Yes sir, which steak di

It's my pleasure.  I’m happy to share with you a Bible verse and a recipe, and tell you about my newest book! One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 10:9.  “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” I love this verse because it distills down the message of Christianity to its simplest elements. So often people add to the gospel, but it really all comes down to our belief in Jesus’ saving work on the cross. This verse tends to make its way into my writing. It’s in my latest novel, Moonlight and Mystery, when the heroine, Beth attends a carnival at a

We have two sons and six grandchildren. We live in PA, between two mountains.   Were you an avid reader as a child? If so, what did you read? Oh yes! Not only did I read a lot, but my mom also read to me and my brothers.
