Looking Out The Window: For Mystery Lovers: Lillian Duncan Talks About Her New Christmas Novella, All I Want For Christmas Is Johnny Rocker Dead

A Warm Welcome to Lillian Duncan, Former Carol Award Finalist

Murder, Mayhem and Christmas? Really?

On the surface, it may seem that murder and mayhem doesnā€™t necessarily go with Christmas, but I love weaving a Christmas story in with suspense and romance. Because of that I have several Christmas stories availableā€”The Christmas Stalking; The Christmas Angel Thief; No Home for the Holidays; and A Christmas Stolen.

My latest Christmas novella is All I Want For Christmas Is Johnny Rocker Dead! Howā€™s that for a title filled with murder, mayhem and Christmas?

I wonā€™t tell you the plot but I will tell you the story is about how much God loves each of usā€”no matter what weā€™ve done. And isnā€™t that what Christmas is really all about?

Speaking of Christmas, one of the things my husband and I do every Christmas is to clear out our enclosed porch and then we put up Christmas trees. Yes, I said trees as in many trees.

Last year, we had 14 or 15 trees up. In all sizes and shapesā€” even a snowman tree. We donā€™t have any young children or grandchildren around, but that doesnā€™t stop us from celebrating the season and honoring Jesusā€™s birthday.

Merry Christmas to all!

About All I Want For Christmas Is Johnny Rocker Dead

Johnny Rocker believes he's doesn't need anyone or anythingā€”especially God because after all he is a rock and roll god. When the floor beneath his feet crumblesā€”literallyā€”he hurtles toward a different truth.

Since the death of Maddie's family, she's run from life and love and become the best bodyguard she can be. But, with God's help, she's ready to step out of her comfort zone and into a different life. When her boss asksā€”no begsā€”her to take on one last job, she finds it hard to refuse. Someone is trying to kill mega-star Johnny Rocker. It's Maddie Cotton's job to make sure that doesn't happen.

Even under Maddie's protection the threats continue. As Christmas approaches the danger escalatesā€”someone doesn't want Johnny Rocker to see the new year, and they are willing to kill Maddie as well. Johnny and Maddie will have to set aside their differences and learn to lean on each other and God if they want to see Christmas day.

I AM.

He ignored the voice. This was one of his favorite rooms in his mansion. Johnny Rockerā€™s gold and platinum records and postersā€”of him, of courseā€”as well as old movie posters, decorated the walls. Because after all, it was the theater room. Music blared from every speaker in his mansion, including this room. His music, of course, because he was a rock and roll god.

I AM

Probably a trick of the acoustics.

Iā€™m not losing it. Everythingā€™s fine. He poured another drink and sat. His fingers ran across the buttery-soft, brown leather of the recliner. Nothing but the best for Johnny Rocker. Whoā€™d have ever thought that poor little Zeb Walker would be sitting in his debt-free mansion? He could afford anything he wanted these days. The good life. He had it all. People loved their rock and roll gods.

I AM

The door opened before Johnny could yell at the unseen voice. ā€œWell if it ainā€™t Stan the Man.ā€
His manager of eight years glared. ā€œWhat are you doing up here, Johnny? The partyā€™s downstairs. Everyone keeps asking, ā€˜whereā€™s Johnny?ā€™ā€

ā€œI know where they are, and thatā€™s why Iā€™m up here.ā€

ā€œVery funny. Now get downstairs. The reason weā€™re having the party is so you can prove youā€™ve still got it.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t have to prove anything to anyone. Iā€™m Johnny Rocker.ā€

ā€œLetā€™s go, Johnny. Now.ā€

ā€œThatā€™s not my name.ā€

Stan rolled his eyes. ā€œYouā€™re in one of those moods again. Fine. Iā€™ll call you Zeb if that makes you happy. So, Zeb. Downstairs. Now.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t know when you became my boss.ā€

Stan grinned. ā€œWhen I made you your first million.ā€

ā€œRight behind you,ā€ Zeb said, but Stan was already gone. Apparently even a rock and roll goā€”

I AM

He looked at the glass in his hand. No more of this if it made him hear voices. He walked toward the door.

BOOM!

What was that? The floor below him disappeared.

I AM, the voice said again as Zeb hurtled through the floor.

Looking Out the Window: Memories on the Heart

Several weeks ago my husband, Rick, and I ate at a restaurant we frequent fairly regularly. The cute, young waitress who usually waits on us took our orders for burgers and fries. Iā€™ll call her Mandy. As usual Mandyā€™s smile and bubbly personality brightened our day. We giggled and confessed to her that we shouldnā€™t eat the fries, but we were going to do it just this once. She joked. ā€œOkay, youā€™re being bad today.ā€ Not long after we got our food a couple came in and sat in the booth behind us. Mandy walked up to the table with her big grin. ā€œHi, how are you?ā€ she asked. The man, who had salt and pepper colored hair and a pudgy face, spoke in a harsh tone, ā€œI want the steak.ā€ ā€œSure, which one would you like?ā€ Mandy asked. ā€œI donā€™t want you to put it in the microwave. That will make it tough. Do you understand?ā€ Mandyā€™s lips turned down. ā€œYes sir, which one do you want to order?ā€ ā€œI want it medium rare. I donā€™t want blood oozing out of it. I want it cooked right.ā€ ā€œYes sir, which steak di...

Looking out the Window: Carol Wilson James Talks about Her New Christmas Book, Christmas Lights and Moonlit Nights. Tells Us How to Make A Travelling Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A Warm Welcome to Carol Wilson James Hi Carol, I can't wait to hear about your new book and the sandwiches. Thanks for sharing with us. To receive a FREE short story sign up for Carol's  newsletter The Traveling Grilled Cheese  Because my dad was a career military officer, the longest we ever lived in one place was three years. And when the Air Force said ā€œMove,ā€ we moved. Sixty years ago, there werenā€™t fast food restaurants or grocery stores open twenty-four hours a day. So my mom had to figure out how to feed the family when nothing was open and she had no stove. Thus, she made "Ironed Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.ā€ (To this day, my brother chooses these over a standard grilled cheese.) Ingredients Bread, cheese, butter, aluminum foil, and your iron.  Heat your iron. Rub one side of a piece of foil with butter. Fold it in half, buttered sides together.  Make a cheese sandwich.   Insert your sandwich between the buttered sides of the foil (like a taco)...
