Hi Denise, tell us what inspired you to write A Harvest Heart.
A friend of my husband from college who also became a writer contacted me about joining The Georgia Peaches Series. This MAP (Multiple Author Project) features monthly contemporary Christian romance novellas set in Georgia. Since I’ve always been a Georgia peach and 95% of my stories are set in my home state, it seemed a perfect fit. I found that releasing independently published novellas between my traditional, full-length book releases is a good way to stay connected to my readers. Plus, I’m a sucker for seasonal romances. My first Georgia Peaches story, A Holiday Heart is set in December, also in the North Georgia mountains.
What do you love about this book? And what do you hope readers will tell others about it?
I have a meme that sums it up.
As I’ll share next, I do write some more serious fiction with gripping action and deep spiritual themes, but sometimes, you just need an uplifting and lighthearted read. That’s what I aim for in these seasonal romances.
What themes do you write about?
Even my Hallmark-y stories have inspirational themes and show God at work in the main characters’ lives. In A Harvest Heart, Hope hasn’t moved past the death of her father and the sense of not belonging with her mother and sister. In ,A Holiday Heart the heroine, Ashlyn, teeters on the brink of making some dangerous choices after her college boyfriend breaks her heart. Unraveling the secret of her grandmother’s past redirects her life. TV renovation queen Shelby in Fall Flip struggles with perfectionism. In my more serious historicals, I tend to focus on God’s redemptive call to all people groups, forgiveness, faithfulness, and healing from inner wounds.
Do you have to juggle writing with a job, family responsibilities or other obligations? If so, how do you balance it?
In the early years of motherhood, I worked my writing around my responsibilities of being a stay-home mom. Now, I balance writing with editing. God has been gracious to gradually build my work commitments as my parenting needs lessened. I became a general and then a managing editor for Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas’ two historical imprints several years ago. Soon after, I began editing independently on the side as well. LPC has since been purchased by Iron Stream Media Fiction, where I continue to serve as an editor.
My editing training made my writing process much more efficient, and I find the jobs are complementary.
What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?
Probably historical preservation and restoration. That was my second career choice back in college. I’ve loved old buildings ever since my parents took me to historic sites as a child. Several of my stories reflect that fascination.
More About A Harvest Heart
#16 in The Georgia Peaches Series
Hope Richardson is good at just that—hoping. Problem is, she’s often disappointed—by fathers who die, boyfriends who ghost her, and promotion at her event planning firm. It’s her twin sister, Faith, for whom things work out. When Faith’s fiancé lands an out-of-town job, Hope is called home to plan a wedding in the Georgia foothills … and jumpstart the tea room Faith was supposed to run with their mother.
Of all the people to make the first reservation for his family farm’s new event barn, Tucker Bradshaw least expects Hope Richardson. She might’ve rebound-dated him their senior year of high school, but she was all too eager to run back to the star football player in college. Always wanting something bigger and better than their hometown of Clarkesville. Than him.
Her sister’s wedding plans land Hope in the midst of the opening season for Tucker’s corn maze. When a harvest romance reignites, Hope searches for the faith to finally live up to her name.
