Looking out the Window: Katie Clark Shares the Story Behind Her New Book, A Dim Hope, Releasing on September 22
A Warm Welcome to Katie Clark
Thanks so much for having me here!
It's my pleasure.
One of the most common questions I get asked about my books is where I get my ideas.
My latest novel, A Dim Hope, came about from a dream. This isn’t all that strange for me; I dream in color all the time! This dream, though, and the way the novel came about, is special to me.
You see, my nine-year-old daughter was in the hospital at the time. She was in the intensive care unit at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she had been battling her second cancer diagnosis. Emma wasn’t doing well.
I dreamt about two sisters—one was healthy, and one was not. The healthy sister wanted to save the unhealthy sister, and the method of saving would come through a yellow stone set in a leather bracelet. The dream involved a quest.
When I woke from my dream, I told Emma all about it. She loved hearing my stories, and she had talked over lots of story points with me in years past. This was the last book she helped me plan, as she went on to Heaven not too long after this dream.
It took several months, but I eventually started writing this book. It took years to finish, but today it is ready for the world to read. I hope I have written it worthy of Emma’s eyes for the story, but more importantly I hope I have written it worthy of my Lord. It is through Him all our salvation comes!
Amber is in trouble. Her sister is dying—and so is her homeland. The Lifeforce stones that power their world are waning, and no one knows why. When the rulers of the land prepare a scientific expedition to study the place where the veins of the Lifeforce run deep, Amber is forced to travel as a servant with the expedition. Though Amber has longed for adventure, her dream always included her sister. Now her only wish is to return home with a cure before it's too late.
Crops are wilting, food is scarce, and sandstorms, avalanches, and earthquakes threaten to doom the expedition. Besides this, there are more sinister forces at work. Quiet arguments and missing supplies lead Amber to believe their efforts are being sabotaged. She uncovers clues, but the real source of their trouble—and hope—lies in places she never expected.
