Hi Gay, first, tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a retired interior designer, a current pastor’s wife, and mother to grown children. Two daughters live near me in Texas, and one moved to Kentucky. I’m in a small town west of Houston but drive to the city for shopping. My driving record scares everyone, including me. As I write this, my husband is in the garage trying to repair my latest scrape with the side of our garage.
Many writers loved to read as children. How about you? If so, what did you read?
I grew up in Texas and hated heat. As a child, I stayed indoors with a book, magazine, anything I could get my hands on. I read the Louisa May Alcott books many times over. I also loved Nancy Drew. Today the books I choose are usually romance or paranormal. I just finished Saint Odd: An Odd Thomas Novel by Dean Koontz. This was the last in the Odd Thomas series and I’m upset that Mr. Koontz ended the series. Odd Thomas was a hoot.
Let’s talk about your writing. Why do you write?
I’ve been a writer for years, but I wrote for religious periodicals. I’ve also produced a travel series. I now write fantasy, romance, and sometimes add a bit of mystery to my stories. When the idea of a bumbling, dyslexic angel came to mind, I had to write about her mishaps as she tried to help humans. Some of the things that happen to Sarah I’ve endured myself. Especially the driving episodes.
Tell us about your latest book.
Sarah and a Midnight Cruise to Catalina Island is the newest edition in Sarah’s adventures. The idea of a cruise came from one of my own experiences. Several years ago, I worked in retail, and no one could take a vacation after September 1. My dad died in August. My husband couldn’t leave church responsibilities, so I took a cruise to Catalina Island by myself. The trip helped with my grief. The small, compact cabin was something I could handle while the rest of my life spun out of control. This book has Carolyn Baker facing the same circumstance. Her dad died, and she travels alone. Sarah brightened her life and befriended her aboard the ship. And Sarah, being the bumbler she is, brought Carolyn smiles. Sarah’s antics will make the reader laugh. All my books contain a lot of humor. A reader once wrote this on a review. “Gay provides inspiration and teaches Christian principals in an entertaining way.”
Ahh, thanks for sharing. Does your faith affect your writing? If so, how?
My faith is the fiber of my being. I began a relationship with Jesus when I was six years old and surrendered for special service when I was eight. At the age of seventeen, I met my husband. We dated six months and married. I’ve been a pastor’s wife ever since. By the way, our wedding took place in a Dallas hospital. After accepting a church in Oklahoma, hubby returned to Irving and asked me to marry him. I said yes, but I wanted to wait until my mom was released from the hospital. His reply? “I told the church I was bringing a wife in three weeks.” So…we said our vows in a hospital on a Thursday night, moved my things into a trailer on Friday, drove to Oklahoma on Saturday, and on Sunday, hubby preached his first sermon—just as he’d promised the church he’d do. Can you believe I did that in three weeks? My hubby is a doer and never procrastinates. Knowing I was meant for service gave me momentum to hurry up the ceremony.
What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you?
We had just moved to a new pastorate in Texas, and I’d been invited to speak at a couple’s retreat. I had directions to the location, but like my angel character Sarah, I’m a little dyslexic when it comes to following them. I entered what I thought was the correct street. Problem? It wasn’t a roadway. I’d straddled my car between two rails of a railroad track! I drove forward, then backward, tried turning the wheel to left and right…nothing. I was stuck. I jumped out of my car and a lady offered to take me to the police station. I told the officer about my situation and he managed to stop an oncoming train just in time. I called hubby and when he arrived, he asked the officer, “Sir, did you test her to see if she’d been drinking?” Of course he was kidding, but my reputation as a whacky preacher’s wife grew instantly.
Thank goodness, they arrived in time. I see you have good fodder for many of the Sarah books. Introduce us to the main character in Sarah and a Midnight Cruise to Catalina Island.
Carolyn Baker, mid-twenties, is a college student with a job at a mall. She lives in the Houston area and has no boyfriend, but she’s lonely and grieving. Two men immediately become infatuated with her. Sarah must help Carolyn find the eman who is right for her.
What sort of hindrances does Sarah face on this mission?
For the first time ever, she must deal with a wicked spirit by the name of Talen. Talen is sent by his boss from the under-world, and his mission is to keep Carolyn from uniting with the correct man. Talen tricks Sarah into leaving her charge and tries to destroy her on Cloud Nine. Tomas, the Warrior Angel, comes to Sarah’s rescue.
I enjoyed writing this Sarah book. I used many of my own experiences from the cruise I took alone. I hope readers will like it as well.
Thanks Gail for hosting me on your blog. You ask great questions!
It’s my pleasure!
