Hi Mildred, tell us about the time Jesus intervened in you and your husband's life.
The Day God Sent a Road
I needed to get to the doctor. We were young and had no fear of icy roads.
After several years of hoping for a child, the doctor confirmed I was expecting. My husband and I moved through the next few weeks in a sort of daze, not sure if we could believe our dreams were finally coming true. Then problems developed, and we feared I was losing the baby.
The doctor was a specialist in a larger city about seventy-five miles away, but when I called with my concerns, he asked me to come to his office. Determined to do whatever it took to save our child, we started out although snow and ice covered the ground and dotted the roads. Clouds and cold temperatures did little to help clear the highways, but that didn’t deter us. We’d be careful, and everything would be fine.
We made good time on the two-lane highway, but after turning onto the four-lane that would take us to the city, we slowed to what we thought was a safe speed. Maybe we misjudged, or maybe God wanted to use our experience as a lesson in faith.
Almost fifty miles from our destination, we hit a patch of ice. Our car spun out of control in the middle of the south-bound lanes. The gray sky swirled past my window along with white-covered trees and a rock face that had been cut away when they built the highway. We made a 360 in the middle of the road, then shot across the median separating the south and northbound lanes. As if guided by an unseen hand, our car climbed a slight rise onto the other side. An enormous wall of ice-glistening brown rock rose before us. We were crosswise of the highway, an unmovable wall of sandstone and granite looming in our windshield.
“Jesus, help us!” We both cried out at the same time.
Death seemed imminent, but just before the tires left the second northbound lane, the car turned again, taking us several feet north. Was this my husband’s doing? No, he’d released the steering wheel when he called out for help. So, did our car just turn at the right moment to avoid a collision that would have likely killed us both? And what of the other cars on the highway? There were very few brave enough to get out on that icy road that morning, but there were some, and none got in our way. But that isn’t the end of the story.
After traveling north a few feet, the car took another left turn and took us across the median again onto the southbound lanes. By this time, my husband had again tried to take control of the car, but his attempt was useless. We slid all the way across two lanes before leaving the highway to go down a short embankment to a gravel road below. At that point, he regained control, turned the car onto the road, and drove up the incline to a stop sign. Stopping for a moment so we could catch our breath and thank God for coming to our rescue, he finally drove back onto the highway and followed the southbound lane to the city and my doctor’s appointment.
Now here’s the best part. On our way home from that appointment, we looked carefully for the road that brought us back to the highway. We couldn’t find it. Many times we’ve traveled that same stretch of highway, each time looking for a road that doesn’t seem to exist. Did God build a road just for us? He could have!
Did Jesus hear our prayer? Did God? We were helpless in our own strength. Only by the intervention of God, through His Son Jesus, were we unharmed. Who guided our car when we couldn’t? I don’t know if God dispatched angels to keep us safe, but I fully believe that could be. I know the Holy Spirit is already here on earth to comfort, teach, protect, and heal as we worship Him. Someone did what we couldn’t. Only God knows the details.
One thing I know. This story is true because I lived through it and praise God for all He has done in my life. This is only one story of God’s intervention in our lives. The latest happened just this year. He still works in our lives!
By the way, we lost that baby, but I believe he or she is waiting for us in Heaven. And our house did not remain childless. We have three beautiful children who have been a blessing to us in ways they may not even know. And the grandchildren? Oh my! They are special gifts from our loving Father in Heaven.
