About Christmas in Vermont
Faith and trust are sometimes difficult to master, but can a sparkling Christmas in Vermont change all that?
Returning home to Holly Berry Village and beginning her career as an Estate gemologist, puts Christal Birchwood completely in her comfort zone. But when she meets the new town physician, Cole Townsend, the barriers she has created around herself quickly begin to shatter and fall.
Will she trust her faith enough to carry her into a sparkling, new beginning? And will Cole be able to trust his heart to love again?
Christmas in Vermont Summary
After studying for two years in Switzerland, certified gemologist Christal Birchwood arrives back home in Holly Berry Village just in time for Christmas. The world of Estate and vintage jewelry suits her well. It is exact and precise, and there are no unknowns. This science is Christal’s comfort zone. It is her first day on the job as the Estate jewelry expert at Mr. Cowsill’s jewelry store. Colt Townsend, the new town physician, is her first customer. But when she models a necklace for him Mr. Cowsill becomes upset and terminates her employment immediately.
Later that afternoon she sees Cole. While they are talking, she is so distracted that she nearly walks in front of moving traffic. He grabs her to safety just in time. This close call jolts her out of her doldrums. She goes back to Mr. Cowsill and persuades him to rehire her. Then she stops by Cole's office and invites him to dinner to thank him for getting her out of harm's way and he accepts.
The next day, she’s assisting Mr. Thornton, a neighbor, who tells her that his wife passed on while Christal was away. She resolves never to be hurt like that. Cole is also in the shop and hears this exchange. His reaction is the opposite of Christal’s. He cannot forgive himself for something he did in the past which led to his sister’s death. His self-imposed penance on earth has been to live a life of solitude.
But when he hears this gentleman’s love for his wife, he feels God calling him to open his heart to what God has planned for him: getting to know Christal. So he surprises her at home with decorations for her Christmas tree, and a gift for her dog, Lola. While he is there, Mr. Cowsill calls Christal, and asks her to come into work, and she does.
Later that day, Christal's sister, Victoria, visits the shop but their cordial meeting takes a scary turn when Christal stumbles and falls down, hitting her head. When Christal opens her eyes she sees Cole holding hands with Victoria and wonders what is going on between the two of them.
Later, Christal confronts Victoria about this, since she is married, and Victoria tells Christal she’s out of touch with the realities of life. Christal is devastated, and later that day Colt announces that he is planning to leave town, but doesn’t really explain why.
On her way to work at the jewelry store, Christal runs into Cole’s friend, Jerry, and tells him that Cole is leaving town. Jerry explains that Cole is going to a neighboring village to visit his aunt, the woman who raised him, and this is something he does fairly regularly— but today he’s playing Santa at the Senior Center Christmas Party. Christal goes to work at the jewelry shop, and is very busy, until she gets a phone call from Victoria, who is experiencing difficulties with her pregnancy, apparently bleeding.
Unnerved, Christal doesn’t know what to do. But then she remembers that Cole is a doctor and she goes to the Senior Center to see if he will help her. She finds him, and starts to explain the problem, but he jumps up and insists that they get right to Victoria‘s house. On the way there, they say a prayer together, and the bond that is growing between them becomes clearer.
When they get in the house, they find Victoria and deliver her baby girl, Hope! The ambulance arrives and takes Victoria to the hospital, and when Cole and Christal have a moment together, they realize the miracle that they had just witnessed, as well as the miracle that God has performed by bringing the two of them together. They acknowledge their love for each other.
When they leave the hospital, they go back to Victoria’s house, where Cole gives her her Christmas present, which is a beautiful charm bracelet. There is one charm on it, a glittering Christmas tree, and he helps her fasten the clasp (just as he did with the necklace in chapter 1). They share a tender moment, enjoying this sparkling Christmastime and looking forward to many more sparkling Christmases together in the future.
